Since 1975, the Collegiate Women Sports Awards program recognizes the accomplishments of outstanding student-athletes in NCAA member colleges and universities around the U.S.  The program's highest honor goes annually to the Collegiate Women Athlete of the Year, who is awarded with the prestigious Honda-Broderick Cup. Past winners include, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Ann Meyers-Drysdale, Mia Hamm, Lisa Fernandez, Misty May-Treanor, Courtney Kuppets, and Candace Parker.

Leading up to the awarding of the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year in June, the program also recognizes female athletes from Division I NCAA schools seasonally throughout the year in each of 12 different sports, designating each as a Honda Sports Award winner. The Top Three finalists for Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year are then chosen from these 12 Honda Sports Award winners.

Other top awards include the Division II and Division III female athletes of the year, as well as an annual Honda Inspiration Award winner. Periodically an honoree is also chosen for the Irv Grossman Award of Merit, which recognizes both exceptional individuals and groups.

With all its awards and activities, the overall goal of The Collegiate Women Sports Awards program is to honor outstanding achievement by NCAA women athletes, recognizing not only superior athletic skills, but also leadership, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service. By recognizing these achievements, the program aims to improve the general condition of athletics for college women and help elevate female collegiate sports on a national level.
